Usually when you stand over a dig-able area the spade's icon will show up on your d-pad hotkey thingy.
If it's not showing up and you'd rather try digging anyway, simply go into your inventory, check under "Other" and scroll up. It should be near the very top of the list. Select it,and use it. In order to open it, the player must give it a gift, even a simple one, such as chocolates or a rose. There is also a Silver Key in this area, buried in the middle of the ring of roses near the house. The spade is required to dig it up. It can be obtained by buying them from the shop in Bowerstone North.
They are also needed to give to Lady Grey in order to marry her, although many people in Albion become offended if a black rose is given to them. During this quest, you are tasked to bring Lady Grey a Black Rose, owning a house and finding her necklace.
To find the necklace, talk to the people in Bowerstone North. One of them will tell you that he has seen it in Oakvale. Use a Cullis gate to get to Barrow Fields. Walk down the hill just a little and follow the path to left but before the demon door near the bridge. Walk through the archway into the Gray House area; the stables are immediately to the right.
The thing which is pointed at in this fable is so obvious, that it will be impertinent to multiply words about it. Take an ancient helmet from his house. You have to find all the parts of the outfit and take it to the crypt at the eastern end of the cemetery.
